The Birthday Planning Mistake No One Talks About
Yesterday we celebrated my son’s third birthday party.
Like most parents, I’d spent weeks making sure everything was just right. Every decoration had its place. Every balloon was blown up. Every party bag was packed. Every little detail had been checked off.
By the end of the day, everyone kept telling us what a wonderful party it was.
And it really was.
But today, as I reflected on everything, I realised I’d made a birthday planning mistake that I don’t hear people talk about very often.
I’d planned the party down to the smallest detail.
Yet somehow, I still missed something important.
Let me take you back.
It was 2:30 in the morning. I was tying the very last balloon before finally calling it a night.
For the first time in weeks, I stopped thinking about what still needed to be done and started imagining the day ahead.
I pictured kneeling beside my son as he opened his presents. Welcoming our guests into our home. Watching his excitement. Standing beside him as we handed out party bags. Looking around the room and simply soaking it all in.
I smiled, grabbed a couple of hours of sleep, and couldn’t wait for the day to begin.
Then the day arrived.
It wasn’t until the next day that I realised what had happened.
I couldn’t believe it.
I didn’t welcome a single guest through my own front door.
Not one.
I was so busy making sure everyone else enjoyed the party that I barely experienced some of the moments I’d been looking forward to most.
Welcoming our guests.
Watching my son’s excitement.
Cake time.
Saying goodbye.
Not because those moments weren’t important…
But because I hadn’t planned any space for them.
When everyone gathered around the cake and the room fell silent, I hadn’t given any thought to what I wanted to say. A simple, heartfelt thank you would have been enough.
Then, as everyone headed home, I found myself calling out, “Don’t forget to grab a party bag,” instead of standing beside my son, thanking each family personally and saying goodbye.
None of this ruined the party.
My son had an incredible day.
This isn’t about regret or trying to create the perfect birthday.
It’s simply a reflection.
Looking back, I realised there was a pattern.
The moments I missed weren’t the big milestones.
They were the little connection points in between.
The welcome.
The pause.
The thank you.
The goodbye.
We spend so much time planning the cake, the balloons, the decorations and the party supplies because they help create the magic.
But they’re only part of what makes a birthday unforgettable.
I’ve realised that being present doesn’t just happen because we want it to.
It needs intention.
It needs space.
It needs planning.
So next time, alongside my shopping list and decorating checklist, I’ll also have a little checklist for myself.
The Checklist I Wish I’d Written

The balloons will come down.
The cake will be eaten.
The decorations will be packed away.
Years from now, my son probably won’t remember what colour the balloons were or exactly what was inside the party bags.
But he’ll remember how the day felt.
The people who came.
The hugs.
The laughter.
The quiet moments in between.
Those are the memories that stay with us.
Next time, I’ll plan those moments just as carefully as I plan the cake, the balloons and the decorations.
And if you’re planning a special celebration for someone you love, I hope you’ll plan them in too.
Planning a Birthday Party of Your Own?

If you’re in the middle of planning a special day for your little one, take your time, enjoy the process and remember to leave a little space for yourself in the plan too.
